19th century Japanese wooden kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony) made in a shape of Tama (sacred pearl). Very elegant shape and beautiful ridged pattern to the wood, top and bottom fit nicely. Gold lacquered both on the inside and outside, and painted with a pine branch on the outside. Signed with a single Japanese character on the back. This is an unusual and fascinating combination sake and hot water pot crafted so that it could be brought to the table on a cold winter night. It has its own hibachi which allowed for boiling water for tea and/or warming sake. From the famous 'Nambu' tetsubin ironworks guild in Northern Japan, this exquisite antique Japanese tetsubin has hexigonal turtle shells, each with a crane's head inside. Very rare.
