A marvelous sample book showing 68 different samples of intricately stencil-dyed patterns called komon. Komon refers to an all-over pattern and it also suggests the very small, all-over patterns popular in the late Edo and Meiji eras. This is a great compendium of these varied designs, which are house over 17 pages within a nicely tooled and stamped leather binding.

Zanshi-ori, or cloth woven from remaindered threads, is one of the favorite folk textiles here at Sri. This particular piece is remarkable in its heavily woven texture, and the profusion of knots seen throughout the weaving of the piece. This is an asa "nobori" where figures of samurai and a horse are hand painted. Nobori is a kind of a banner which has been post on "Tango-no-sekku, Boy's Festival on May 5 wishing for a boy's healthy growth since Edo era. "Koi-nobori ( carp nobori )" is more common these days. This is a beautiful hand painting by a prominent craftsperson. Meiji era ( late 19th C ). In good condition except for a rip and some reddish blurs. 39cm x 3m86cm 15.4" x 12ft8"

This is a Kurume kasuri futon cover which is hand woven and dyed with natural indigo. Kurume region in Fukuoka prefecture has been a producing center of "Kurumegasuri" since ca. 1800, late Edo era. This is a geometric design of Japanese castle. A double ikat mosaic pattern is a characteristic of Kurumegasuri. In excellent condition except for a stain in the bottom area. This is a happi with nice "ishi-datami" pattern which is katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing )and dyed with natural indigo. It is made of hand spun and hand woven cotton fabric. Ishi-datami means "stone flooring or pavement" and it is a traditional pattern in Japan. It has many light brown stains all over and several mending patches.
