This handsome, tsutsugaki (freehand paste resist dyed) five-panel noren is of a pale grey asa (hemp or ramie) fabric overdyed with indigo. The asa fabric is of a very toothy, heavy hand, very evidently hand loomed. The noren, or doorway hanging, shows six small pine saplings, all hand drawn using rice paste extruded through a cone-shaped tube. This small coat is beautifully colored and patched, and, in person, it is much more alluring than shown in these photos. The base of this coat is a middle-figure kasuri (ikat) cotton fabric which was once a very deep indigo color but has faded out to be a kind of deep grey. The patchings are beautiful blue hand loomed cotton.
There is a wonderful, unusual surprise on the interior of the coat: what appears to be a patch for mend... Click for details

This pieced--or yose--juban is an under-kimono. It is made of five different silks, with the exception of the ikat silks (very likely these are early Meisen silks) the exterior of the piece is chirimen, or crepe silk.
The piece work of the kimono is wonderful in that the back is of an asymmetrical design. The contrast of the blue silks with the silver and plum Meisin silks of the sleeves and bottom is beautiful. Down the proper right, back, of t... Click for details
