The phoenix, emblem of peace, shimmers in shades of yellow, blue and purple on both sides of this Meiji era silk obi. A background pattern in cream and brown provides a counterpoint to the colorful birds and flowers. This is a "hitoe" obi, which means it is woven and unlined, meant to be worn during the hot Japanese summers. Hitoe obi were made in varying widths and lengths and in either single or double layers. This very deeply blue indigo dyed futon cover--most likely recombined from a kimono or yukata--shows two very animated crabs amid young bamboo, under a rain of white dots, all dyed in the shibori technique.

This is a short silk katsugi ( a head veil ) which is remade from kosode ( short-sleeved kimono in Edo era ) with beautiful embroideries partly with gold threads. Embroideries are in excellent condition whose motifs are Torikabuto-a hat worn at a traditional dance which models on a head of a phoenix, Sho-a traditional Japanese wind instrument and maple leaves.
