This is a cotton kiku ( chrysanthemum ) karakusa futon cover which is handwoven and dyed with natural indigo. It is washed-out and indigo color is faded. This is an asa "nobori" where figures of samurai and a horse are hand painted. Nobori is a kind of a banner which has been post on "Tango-no-sekku, Boy's Festival on May 5 wishing for a boy's healthy growth since Edo era. "Koi-nobori ( carp nobori )" is more common these days. This is a Kurume kasuri futon cover which is hand woven and dyed with natural indigo. Kurume region in Fukuoka prefecture has been a producing center of "Kurumegasuri" since ca. 1800, late Edo era. This is a geometric design of Japanese castle. A double ikat mosaic pattern is a characteristic of Kurumegasuri. In excellent condition except for a stain in the bottom area.
