Oiran were high-ranking courtesans of the feudal period who wore tall lacquered footwear or Koma-geta (or mitsu-ashi - three legs). Unlike geisha and maiko, who only entertained by conversation, singing and dancing, oiran and tayuu were the highest rank in the hierarchy of prostitution in the pleasure quarters. Whereas geisha and maiko wear tabi socks, the oiran and tayuu preferred not to do so (even in winter!) and their toes can be seen poking out under many layers of kimono while wearing thes... Meiji Era, c. 1895, 63" x 53"/ 160 cm x 135 cm, This beautifully faded homespun indigo dyed cotton futon cover was recombined by its successive owners in an attempt to create utilitarian longevity from what must have once been a pictorial futon cover with a coherently drawn image. Now, the piece comes to us in wonderfully graphic form with its vigorous and wildly vibrant trailing vine images broken and reassembled against equally fractured family crest or 'mon' showing a stylized cherry blossom... Meiji Era, c. 1910, 65" x 54"/ 165 cm x 137 cm, This indigo dyed cotton futon cover is fashioned from a yogi, or sleeping kimono, made of homespun cloth. The cotton's hand is heavy and rich, as one can imagine from hand woven textiles of this sort. Three 'karajishi' or Chinese lions frolic over the surface of this piece in a spirit of animated play. China is the direct source for the motif of these lions, although it is presumed that that the lion motif is ultimately derived from Persian, Indi... Click for details

Meiji or Taisho Era, c. 1915, 51"x 52"/ 132 cm x 129.5 cm This wonderfully drawn indigo cotton futon cover shows the very traditional and highly auspicious grouping of plum, bamboo and pine, or 'shochikubai.' This combination of motives is a favorite one used at weddings, and this piece no doubt was from a bridal trousseau. The shochikubai image is powerful in meaning: bamboo is resilience--it bends but does not break. Plum blossoms are the first blooms to emerge in late winter, early sprin... Click for details

Meiji Era, c. 1910, 57" x 68 1/2"/ 145 cm x 174 cm, This majestic indigo dyed cotton tsutsugaki futon cover was fashioned from a yogi, or sleeping kimono. Its dimensions and proportions--an unusual 5 1/2 panels wide--when viewed in person, make the fine, exuberant drawing even more impressive as the large size provides a 'wide-screen' effect for the pair of folding fans and the wonderfully placed pine trees. The jagged and angular pines provide an intelligent visual foil for the lyrical and bu... Click for details

Breathtakingly beautiful Japanese silk wedding kimono gown, Meiji period (1868-1912), lined with the contrasting color red, very soft silk. It has a beautiful, rich texture woven in a mixture of flat, diagonal and shusu satin ori (weave). Under the sun, you can see the diagonal lines of woven gold threads crossing inside (photo #5). Gowns made in the early Meiji period are not only shorter but the colors are darker with a combination of earth tones (Shibui) comparing to brighter modern gown... Click for details
