This is an amazing old boro futon cover. Light blue part is asa ( linen )and the cords are attached to tie the both rims. Instead of cotton, it was filled with rice straw as cotton was luxurious in that time and rice straw was very warm. All mending patches are hand woven and natural indigo dyed cotton, so this one can be trace back to Meiji era ( 1868~1912 ). 188cm x 156cm 74inch x 61inch

DESCRIPTION: A completely hand sewn tsutsugaki happi, or worker’s jacket, of thick indigo-dyed cotton, the design executed with the tustsugaki technique of using a rice paste resist in the dying process. Prominently featured on the back is the employer's crest, which companies used as an early form of advertising. The full neck and shoulder areas are lined in handspun cotton, dyed light blue. A silk brocade maru obi from Japan's late Meiji Period is covered along both sides of its nearly 13-foot length with fans, each one decorated with flowers and leaves of symbolic significance. The green silk has the soft, lustrous surface that gives antique obi their unique appeal. The phoenix, emblem of peace, shimmers in shades of yellow, blue and purple on both sides of this Meiji era silk obi. A background pattern in cream and brown provides a counterpoint to the colorful birds and flowers. This is a "hitoe" obi, which means it is woven and unlined, meant to be worn during the hot Japanese summers. Hitoe obi were made in varying widths and lengths and in either single or double layers.
