Beautiful black and red urushi Ariake Andon. A full, half and
crescent moon are carved on a lower rack. Andon is an oil lampstand with a wood frame and paper shade. Ariake andon is an one which is kept alight all night. Pair of Japanese 19th Century carved elephant heads, one with its mouth opened and one with it closed. Each architectural piece is carved from a single piece of wood. Beautifully carved with a lot of detail and expression. The elephant with the closed mouth measures 7 1/2" wide, 17" tall by 11" deep and the elephant with the opened mouth measures 7 1/2" wide, 16" tall and 11" deep.

TWO FINE JAPANESE MINGEI KEYAKI WOOD SERVING TRAYS (Japanese Arts & Crafts). These two wooden servings which probably saw use during tea ceremony are obviously related yet quite different in size and decoration. Their form and decoration evince a cooperation between the artist/craftsman and the natural characteristics of the cured keyaki wood in much the same way that certain potters allowed tea bowls to assume their own form and color in the kiln within certain prescribed limits.
