This extraordinary example of a Japanese adjustable “yokogi” crosspiece was carved in fabulous detail from densely-grained Japanese hardwood in the shape of a swimming carp. Meiji period (1868-1912). There is a three-character signature of the unidentified artist carved into the bottom of the fish, which is most unusual since folk art was usually anonymous. This diminutive Japanese mask has been carved from finely grained hardwood, likely keyaki, and represents the face of the comic demon Buaku from a Kyogen play. We believe the mask itself dates to the early 20th century or even earlier; the lucite shadowbox frame in which it is mounted on coarse beige fabric is of a later date. 1900-1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese temple boxwood seal of square section. Superb quality crisp carving of 16 characters in regular script, red seal paste in the grooves of the seal. Metal stud on the side indicates the position of the top of the imprint. Inscribed in ink on top and one side. Beautiful patina on the surface of wood. Height 2 3/8 inches, base 11/16 inches square.
