This bowl was wheel-formed and then pressed into a mold while still soft to create an octagonal form. The soft stoneware clay was then carved and impressed with a stylized chrysanthemum design, allowed to dry, and then covered with a slip of white liquid clay which filled the incising. A rare Korean stoneware maebyong with natural ash glaze on top, circa 1000 A.D.. Measuring 30.5cm or 12 inches high, the maebyong has five lobes and a cupped rim. This vessel has no damage other than a small chip on the mouthrim, visible in an image, and some degradation to the ash glaze from burial. Vases of this type date to the early Koryo period rather than late unified Silla.
