A very rare and old necklace of bronze nail- and bud-shaped beads from Pyu-period Burma, ca. 7-9th century. Similar though not identical necklace can be seen in the book of Sylvia Fraser-Lu, Burmese crafts past and present, page 160. Citing the book: "Most interesting among Pyu finds are unusual heavy, twisted necklaces of bronze made from nail-shaped beads threaded on thick twine, the heads of which freely intertwine to create a dense, seed-like surface (plate 146)". A cast bronze early 20th c burmese noodle-maker in bronze. Handles are made to look like swirling Nagas. Incised decorations on the dragons and in the three bands on the cup. The base has one dish with numerous holes for the noodle making. Early 20th c. Perfect condition. H: 18 cm. This bowl is raised from a sheet of silver and formed into a vessel with gently rounded sides. Having no feet, this slightly rounded base is flattened so that it sits firmly on a flat surface. The entire bowl is covered in hammered repousse work in much detail. Two native bearers hold aloft a bronze gong creating a tableau that was likely made for a colonial official during Burma's long colonial period (1885-1941). This is a large piece--the figures nearly two feet tall, weighing 22 pounds each--suited for use in a large dining room or entry hall.
