This well preserved tablet dating to the 11th century is a terracotta image of Buddha seated in bhumisparsa, or earth-touching position, within an arched niche under a tree. The tree possibly represents the bodhi tree where Buddha attained enlightenment. Relics such as this have been recovered from under stupa throughout Burma. A set of three early 19thC Buddhist monks from Myanmar (Burma). This is one of the few non-Indian items in my collection. These three statues were clearly cast as a set, with the typical heavy verdigris you find in old Buddhist bronzes from decades of burial in the ground. Height 5.6 cm.

A 500-year-old bronze Buddha found in the old Shan capital of Pinya in northern Burma sits in padmasana position with right hand in bhumisparsa, or earth touching, mudra. The Shan, who migrated down into north Burma from Yunnan, China, established their first capital at Pinya in 1298 during Burma's early Ava Period (1287-1752).
