This lacquered wood sculpture of Manok-thi-ha, a double-bodied, human-headed lion, sat as a protector in a Shan Buddhist temple or monastery. The fantastic manok-thi-ha, a creature from Buddhist mythology, is said to roam Mount Meru (center of the Buddhist universe said to be in the Himalaya) along with other guardians of the Buddhist/Hindu cosmos such as garuda, kinnara and pyin-sa-yu-pa. This is an 18th - 19th century bronze statue of a lama from western Tibet. The lama is illustrated seated on a lotus throne with his legs crossed and his hands resting in his lap; he is wearing a cap on his head and a robe over his shoulders. The eyes are inlaid with silver, the lips with copper and the robe and clothes are decorated with engraved delicate patterns. This beautiful statue is in good condition for its age with stains and some dents. Height: 26 cm (10 2/8 inches) Weight: 4 kg.

Antique Thai bronze standing Buddha, in “U” Thong style, beautifully decorated with inset semi-precious stones. Some of the jewels were missing when we acquired the Buddha, and we spent several years in finding matching semi-precious stones and having them professionally inset by a jeweler to match the other stones in order to restore the original look. A slender, graceful Mandalay Buddha stands on a double lotus throne with right hand in varada mudra, gesture of charity and fulfillment of wishes. This early 20th century figure is carved of teak wood and covered with lacquer. Thayo (thickened lacquer) forms decorative edging on the robe and lotus petals on the throne, and is embedded with bits of red mica, much of it covered with a gold-colored wash. This Ava Period (1287-1752) limestone Buddha head is one of three, all made of the same stone but of different sizes, that we have had in our collection since the mid-1990s. This one obviously was cut from a stone backslab indicating early to mid Ava since the use of backslabs, prevalent during the earlier Pagan Period, declined during Ava years.
