A rare Tausug male silk sash (locally called “kambut”) from the Tausug people of southwestern Mindanao, Philippines, circa the early 20th century. The sash is in stepped diamond pattern in nucleated cruciform motifs, woven of naturally dyed purple, orange and cream colored silk. Stepped zigzags and cruciform motifs make up the border patterns. A Bagobo male abaca (banana plant fiber) twill woven short pants (locally called “saroar”) with beaded embroidery from the Bagobo people of south central Mindanao, Philippines circa early 20th century. Around the hem of the abaca pants is a 5.5-inch wide yellow and blue cotton appliqué (called “tutuk”), with rows of white and yellow-green fine beads and multi-colored thread embroidery in squiggle, zigzag, X and W patterns. A rare abaca (banana plant fiber) ikat tube skirt (locally called “pulaw”) from the Subanun people of northwestern Mindanao, Philippines circa the early 20th century. Two abaca ikat panels stitched selvedge to selvedge and end to end make up the tube skirt. Where the selvedges are joined is a beautiful white warp-float patterning of diamonds, chevrons and curls. This is is a cotton ikat pua of the divided middle (“belumpong”) genre, finely-woven and of very high quality of workmanship, created by Ibans from the Kapit area in Sarawak, Borneo, circa the early 1900s. This design is variously labeled as “sempuyong Mata Hari”, or radiant sun, or moon, or shield pattern.
