A maze of jungle creepers, tendrils and coils mesmerizes the eyes as they meander over the whole 49 x 92-inch expanse of this late 19th century ikat pua. Created by Iban-Dayaks from the Kapit area in Sarawak, Borneo, this pua shows a very high level of workmanship. The dominant color is a beautifully saturated red-maroon, showing patina and very vibrant despite more than a century of ritual and ceremonial use. Overall, the condition of this pua is very good. There is an inch of angular tear towa... Click for details

Very rare Shan bronze Buddha from Burma circa 17th to 18th CE, depicted in “Jambupati” royal attire style. Most of this type coming out of Southeast Asia now I believe to be copies (at least all the ones I have seen the past 4 years were). This one was sourced from an American collection. Some of the tines on the crown and head ornamentation have broken off which occurs on about 80% on the genuine ones. The Shan were the only ones to create the elaborate head gear on their Buddha ima... Click for details

An Iban ikat bidang of the spider pattern (locally called “buah emplawa”) from the Kapit area in Sarawak, Borneo circa early 20th century. The dominant color is the traditional maroon and brown, obtained from indigenous plants dyed on handspun cotton. In very good condition, this bidang measures about 17 x 39 inches. There is dirt accumulation and some color fading, evidence of heavy usage over the years. The bidang (skirt) is used by women during rituals and ceremonies.

An Iban Dayak ikat bidang of the deer pattern (locally called “buah rusa”) from the Kapit area in Sarawak, Borneo. The traditional bidang brown and maroon color tones, obtained from natural dyes, are still very vivid, somehow mellowed with age. The bent figures from top to bottom are the deer representations. This bidang measures about 17.5 x 42 inches. There is an inch of yellowish stain, a tear and a small hole, visible on the pictures. Otherwise, this bidang is in good condition. The bidang ... Offered here is a very rare item. It is an complete embroidered piece that I bought in Bangkok over 20 years ago. On a cotton black background, multi-color silk floss embroidery patterns of a floral lattice fill the entire center; around the sides are multiple embroidered borders of meandering floral patterns with striding lions within lozenges. Known as a Pha yok in Thailand, it was made as a ceremonial cloth for use by temples or the Royal family. The power and strength of these proud animal... Click for details

This is a tampan from Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia from about 1900 – 1920 of handspun cotton and natural dyes, woven with brick-red silk in supplementary weft. The overall design is an intriguing collection of stacked and coiled rhombs, outlined by rows of hooks of several sizes that repeat in miniature the coiled rhomb of the main design. The four main rhomboid- shaped patterns reflect the entrance to traditional Sumatran houses, which in turn echo the structure of the great Indonesian sailing ... Click for details
