An Iban woman's ikat "kalambi burong" (bird jacket),circa early 20th century, from the Kapit area in Sarawak, Borneo. The natural dyes, predominantly pink with dark brown, used to define the motifs and green to highlight the lines, are still very vivid. Alternating bands of four types of bird (burong) representations and snaking mottled rattan vine ("daun wi"), separated by lines of white-green, define the kalambi's body. A fine 19th century ikat weaving from the Indonesian island of Timor, this shoulder cloth, or selendang, is centered with a wide, contrasting band woven in a technique called supplementary warp. The design combines the open loop and triangle pattern often seen in Timor textiles.
