Handmade wooden kantok tray from Thailand. These large serving plates were very common prior the use of tables and chairs. Seldom handmade any more, but still used, to a smaller extent, for serving guests while sitting on the floor. At one time there were little legs that would hold the tray up, off the floor, while eating. We cut the old damaged legs off this one, gently sanded the bottom and put a light wax finish on it to preserve the beautiful wood grain and give it new life as a rustic home... Click for details

I bought this in Australia in 1987 from a gallery that specialized in Indonesian art. I was told at the time that is was "antique" and I suppose it could be, but it looks like circa 1960 to me. It is definitely not the typical tourist piece you see now, much more detailed and better carving. There are some repairs ( tail broken off and reguled ), but overall a nice decorative piece. About 12" tall.
