The Sepik River snakes in broad, meandering coils for over 650 miles (1,100 km) before emptying into the Bismark Sea. It is New Guinea's equivalent of the Amazon and the Congo rivers. There are mask-making villages all along the Sepik, but the middle river is the most densely populated with over 25 large villages of the Iatmul language group people between Moim and Pagwi. Tambanum is the largest, others include Timbunke, Angriman, Mindinbit, Kamanimbit, Kanganaman, Palimbei, Yentchan, Korogo and... Click for details

This is a very fine ivory hilt from Malaysia. While it is similar in appearance to the much more common Bugis handles in this style ( often referred to a Garuda -- A Hindu bird deity ), there are subtle differences. Please compare it to my next listing which is a more recent piece from the Bugis people. Fine patina and wear, excellent condition 3 1/2".

The Suryakarta style of this type is probably the most common hilt found, most are made in the last 25 years. This is a Yogyakarta court variation ( no "nose" ) that is much harder to find, and it is at least 100 years old. Finely carved, fantastic wear and patina from decades of use. Excellene condition, 3", wood.
