The General Abbatucci and her mysterious shipment lay on the soft seabed for 127 years before she was located in 1996.
The expected cargo of gold was never found, but among the twisted metal hull and skeletal remains were pieces of jewellery, watches and coins which were recovered from a depth of over 8,000 feet.
These pieces were sold at Christies Auction in 1997.
This is a silver pocket watch in its original encrusted condition. It is as it was when first pulled from the ... Click for details

This is a find old drum from the Amphlett Island group in the Massim district of Papua New Guinea. Massim is better known for the Trobriand islands. The skin is newer but the drum itself dates from pre-WWII ( world war two ), and shows excellent wear and patina from extensive use. There is a repaired crack at the bottom. Shows some use of non-metal tools also, and could be older. About 35 inches ( 91 cm tall ). Nice impressive piece of authentic art from the pacific islands.

This carver's mallet was collected by Phillip Goldman in the 1960's and was purchased by me from Christie's sale of his collection June 22, 1993 Lot 172 p 51. ( see pictures ). The Karawari river in Papua New Guinea is a tributary of the Sepik, the major river of the region. This piece was being used when collected and dates to the mid-20th century. The wonderfully expressive face and the patina show this was a personal item and not carved for the trade. Most likely Yimar people. About 11" ... Click for details

Abelam Peoples, Sepik River Culture Area, Papua New Guinea. This is a wonderful little miniature Yam Mask! The only one we have ever seen, this may have been constructed for the benefit of a child, for the annual yam harvest festival. Measuring a diminutive 4" - 10 cm. in height, and mounted on a custom stand raising the height to 7.5" - 19 cm. Wonderful!

A Majapahit pottery standing figure of a woman holding a pot in her left hand – one arm missing. Dates from the 14th century.14th century. Measures 9" high by 3 1/4" wide by 3" deep. The figure was acquired from a collection of an Indonesian collector of antiquities and was purported to date from circa 1350. We have no provenance to that effect but do believe that it could very well be that old. To be conservative, we will assign a late 19th to early 20th century dating as it could have been mad... A jade greenstone tiki the contorted body of stylized human form. The eyes have been inlaid with red ceiling wax at a later date. There is an area of wear around the feet and an old chip on the right hand side of the face. This piece is from a collection in Jersey and has two old labels on the reverse one referring to 'the journal of anthropology vol.xlv1. my feeling is that this tiki is circa 1700 or earlier.Length 4.25ins.(10.7cm.)
