From a living estate, Ken in the 1950's sailed around the world. All these items are oringinal and not made for the tourist trade. These cerimonial axe heads are generations old.And the handles at least mid to early 20th century. The one axe head is loose and I decided not to reglue as it is a perfect way to show the complete story of these articles that could date back to the stone age.

A FINE OCEANIC CLUB, 19TH CENTURY.
I know little of these things but I do like the original, untouched appearance of this club. I was told it was from Samoa and from the 19th century but it seems to my untutored eye to be similar to clubs from Fiji. Solomon Islands
Height 30.5 cm.
Wood, shell inlay and black pigment. As was characteristic of all Solomon Island shell inlay work each piece of shell was cut and shaped to fit a specific part of the carving. The traditional life style has so completely changed due to the influence of missionaries and European government control that the native arts, for the most part, have not been made since the late 19th and early 20th century.
