This carver's mallet was collected by Phillip Goldman in the 1960's and was purchased by me from Christie's sale of his collection June 22, 1993 Lot 172 p 51. ( see pictures ). The Karawari river in Papua New Guinea is a tributary of the Sepik, the major river of the region. This piece was being used when collected and dates to the mid-20th century. The wonderfully expressive face and the patina show this was a personal item and not carved for the trade. Most likely Yimar people. About 11" ... Click for details

A Majapahit pottery standing figure of a woman holding a pot in her left hand – one arm missing. Dates from the 14th century.14th century. Measures 9" high by 3 1/4" wide by 3" deep. The figure was acquired from a collection of an Indonesian collector of antiquities and was purported to date from circa 1350. This is a fine three dimensional sculptured earthenware head of a Majapahit Chieftain mounted on a wood stand. The head itself measures 5 1/2" high by 5" wide by 5 1/4" deep. It is in excellent condition. The head was acquired from a collection of an Indonesian collector of antiquities and was purported to date from circa 1350.
