This is a fine three dimensional sculptured earthenware head of a Majapahit Chieftain mounted on a wood stand. The head itself measures 5 1/2" high by 5" wide by 5 1/4" deep. It is in excellent condition. The head was acquired from a collection of an Indonesian collector of antiquities and was purported to date from circa 1350. Solomon Islands Height 30.5 cm. Wood, shell inlay and black pigment. As was characteristic of all Solomon Island shell inlay work each piece of shell was cut and shaped to fit a specific part of the carving. The traditional life style has so completely changed due to the influence of missionaries and European government control that the native arts,for the most part, have not been made since the late 19th and early 20th century.
