Strikingly beautiful Japanese Nishijin obi. The style of the obi is the most formal and expensive style which is called maru obi; the design covers front and back, from one end to the other end. This is an older obi than it looks. The colors are vibrant yet elegant. The design is for the joyous occasion with cranes, hand drums, flowers, pines and repeated pattern of waves (sei kai ha) in gold.

Outstanding early South Jersey glass paperweight enclosing a frit design of an eagle with an American flag and the words "The American Fire Philadelphia A.D. 1810." I'm not sure if this refers to a fire department or a fire insurance company. The detailing, especially the feathery delicacy of the eagle's wings, is very nice. The glass is very good quality and the design achieves very nice magnification because of its placement low in the crown...

This unique antique Japanese vase with four handles has a creamy grayish colored body with crackles and numerous pinholes. A couple of crackles are missing (shown in the photo) at the foot. It is 11 1/2 inches tall, circa early 1900s.

Alexandria, VA had a thriving salt-glazed stoneware industry throughout most of the 19th Century. Many pieces are marked with the makers name and "ALEXa" or "DC/ALEXa". Some common makers were John Swann, B.C. Milburne, H.C. Smith and E.J.Miller (a retailer). We are always interested in purchasing examples of Alexandria stoneware. Outstanding American late Classical mirror framed in solid well-figured mahogany with a gilt applied composition border of bellflowers. The gilding has a particularly rich patina. The glass is old and 1/4" thick, but probably not original, and has dulled to a very nice patina. The plate is backed with a wood panel that is covered with paper. The nails holding the plate in place have been replaced.

Origin: America, probably mid-Atlantic region, ca. 1840...

Staffordshire Red Riding Hood & The Wolf figure decorated in red, green, blue, black, pink, yellow and brown enamels.

Origin: Staffordshire, England, ca. 1850. Condition: some scratching to the overglaze red enamel (mostly at her elbow and along the edges of her bonnet), otherwise excellent. Size: 4" tall.

These porcelain inkwells were made as an advertising novelties for Carter's Ink in 1914. This example has nicely painted details and crisp modelling. The bottom is marked "Made In Germany." Excellent condition. 3.75" tall.

Unusual Victorian copper ladies' button-up boot. The Victorians often placed these along their mantles for purely decorative purposes. Most examples are made of brass, but this piece is entirely copper. Another nice touch is the applied scalloped pattern along the front edge of the boot and the white brass buttons.

Terrific pair of sterling silver sugar tongs dating to the reign of George III. The design (made by cutting reflective facets in the silver) is very nicely executed on this quality piece, and unlike many Georgian tongs, these are quite heavy.

The tongs are marked with the lion passant and the script hallmark "GS" for George Smith, entered in London in 1782...

Lovely blown flint glass sugar bowl or covered comport in a panel design, the molded bell-shaped lid rising to a pointed finial. The bottom has a polished pontil. The glass is of heavy weight and good clarity.

This rare Canton covered oval dish (unfortunately, minus its cover) is the finest quality Canton wear, with excellent, crisp underglaze blue decoration. The sides are decorated with floral sprays.

Origin: Canton, China, ca. 1825. Condition: excellent; glaze rubs on the edges; one small glaze bite on the underside of the rim. Size: 9.75" x 8" x 2.25".

Attractive and unusual Victorian inlaid wood stereographgraphoscope. When the lid is raised and a stereograph is inserted in the holder, the viewer looks through the magnifying portal for a realistic three dimensional view.

Origin: probably English, ca. 1850. Condition: very good, although there is some chipping of the veneer along the edges. Size: 5.25" x 3.25" x 1".

Stunning Victorian bronze picture frame, the border inset with gold velvet completely encrusted with gold thread embroidery of twining vines and flowers. The easel back is covered in gold moire silk.

Origin: probably French, ca. 1890. Condition: excellent; some staining on the back side. Size: outer--2.5"x3.25"; sight--1.5"x2.25".

Fabulous brass and copper picture frame in the Aesthetic Japonaise style. The basketweave pattern of the brass frame is detailed with raised copper decorative elements that include a crane standing in a stream, bamboo and cherry blossoms. The back has an easel. The frame is 3.5" x 2.75". The oval opening with glass is 2.25" x 1.5". Circa 1870.
