Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 9.25". This is an example of the "Tougatta-kei" tradition of Miyagi Prefecture. The artisan is Yuda Sadao. Here is a fine squat jar form vase, the deep red clay covered in fish-eyed tenmoku glaze by Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho) Shimizu Uichi (1926-2004), enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Iron red shows through with startling effect like meteorites in a dark night sky of blue and brown. It measures 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall, the same diameter. Shimizu is known for the soft persimmon red temmoku (iron oxide) glaze, as well as crackled white and celadon glazes...

Traditional Japanese pottery teapot called 'kyusu', but smaller and unique tri-footed make attached with natural vine handle, with primitive surface by the warmth of handmade. Anonymous artist, Showa period, 20th century, Japan. Total: H 12 x 9.5 x 5 cm (4.72 x 3.74 x 1.96in). Practically usable. (as put water into and leave it for about 30 minitus then no leak confirmed.)

Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 11.75". This kokeshi is signed "Matsuzuru-saku" (made by Matsuzuru), but little else is known about is origin. The style could be from either Miyagi or Yamagata Prefectures (my guess is Yamagata.) It was most likely made during the 1980's. Cranes cut on the frosted surface rise from ice blue, their necks curling out as handles as they preen. A quintessentially Japanese subject executed with impeccable Japanese craftsmanship. The vase is 11 inches (28 cm) tall, 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) diameter and in perfect condition; enclosed in a covered wooden box.
