Rare Japanese Meiji period woodblock print triptych of the Tokyo-Ueno/Yamashita Train and Ueno Station from the series “Famous Places in Tokyo” by Utagawa Kunitoshi (flourished 1847-1899) dated 1st month of Meiji 22 (1889). The triptych is bound in the original folder and has not been exposed to sunlight. "Enlightenment" prints of the 1880's - 1890's promoted modernization and illustrated the westernization of Japan. A water-worn bowl of natural wood lacquered inside with black and gilded, leaving black lacquer on the rim, to create a startling contrast between the mirror like black, shining gold and ancient weathered wood. It is enclosed in a period wooden box titled Jidai Kihachi Sunabachi (antique Wooden Sunabachi Bowl). It measures 34.5 x 30 x 11 cm (14 x 12 x 4 inches). There are two hairline cracks in the gold (see photos).

The time of Obon is upon us, the middle of August when the spirits of the dead return to visit their families. A lantern is hung so the wandering souls may find their way. And on the last day of Obon (August 16), in Kyoto, is held perhaps the most famous of all the festivals, commonly referred to as Daimonji-yaki, when 6 massive characters are lit on fire in the mountains surrounding the city to light the way home for the ancestors...

NAKED JAPANESE MAN 1908

Old anonymous charcoal drawing backed with washi Japanese paper, dated back to Meiji 41 (1908) as signed, 47.5 x 63.5 cm (18.70 x 24.99in), in very fine antique condition with aged deterioration as is, with stain and surface crack as seen. *Fixed with four small magnets on the wall when shooting, so that no holes at the corners...

Exquisitely formed Hakuji pale porcelain defines this fine vase by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box bearing the Teishitsu Gigei-In stamp. Two simple bands match in width the diameter of the large rings suspended from simplified animal head handles. Fretwork in the lower belt provides the only overt decoration. The vase is 12 inches (31 cm) tall, roughly 6 inches (15 cm) diameter and in excellent condition...

18 cm long set of Kanzashi with five Bira dangling from a branch to which is caught a court cap, possibly dragged from the wearers head during a horse race, or perhaps flung off in a passionate moment. For someone interested we have a museum quality collection of combs and hair pins which I would prefer to sell together in accordance with the previous owners wishes. Birakan (bira Bira Kanzashi) were hair pins used by all classes of society and were one of a woman’s most prized possessions...

A troop of Shishi lion dogs sewn with couched gold thread. frolic among the blossoms and crashing falls embroidered on the re-purposed rich blue patterned Edo period silk of this altar cloth. The original form was likely an uchikake kimono, assembled as an altar drape as a tribute to the owner at a Buddhist Temple. Embroidered up high is the Mitsuba-aoi crest of the Tokugawa Shogun, indicating this was from an aristocratic family as the quality of the embroidery presmes...

Pair of Japanese Meiji period Arita sometsuke porcelain flower vases (hana-ike) with constricted necks and wide mouths, each decorated in underglaze blue on a white ground with a pair of long-tailed birds perched on rockery beneath flowering leafy trees. Butterflies are in flight on the back of the continuous landscape scene. The interior of the cupped mouth holds three sprays of three flowers each and the exterior is bordered with a ruyi head band...

A rush of water descends into mist between the rocky crags tinted with autumns color on this superb silk scroll by Ochi Shokan enclosed in the original signed double wooden box (niju bako) titled Shusei (Voice of Autumn). Top quality, it is mounted in striped silk extended with green and has large solid ivory rollers. The scroll measures 55 x 213 cm (21-1/2 inches x 7 feet). It is in fine condition...

Extra Large Japanese limited edition densely pigmented and textured abstract sosaku hanga woodblock print by Hiroyuki Tajima (1911-1984), aka Kiyoshi Nagai, titled "Half Ruined Wall." Pencil-signed, titled in English and kanji, dated '69, and numbered 32/50 in the bottom margin. Paper: 24 7/8" x nearly 19 1/2" (image: 21 3/8" x 16"). Very good overall condition. There is some wrinkling, soiling, and wear to the large margins of the thick paper...
