A superbly crafted free standing image of a Heron standing high on a rocky outcrop, balanced on one leg, the other curled up tightly in its feathers. It is made in dusted silver, likely over a bronze body. The form is expertly crafted, incised with a fierce expression showing awe for the power of nature and its inhabitants. Three tough looking toads work together to support the base ring of this unusual leaf-shaped bronze Usubata flower basin enclosed in an antique wooden box. It is signed on the base simply “Oka”. Roughly 11 inches (27 cm) diameter, 8 inches (20 cm) tall.

Villains and travelers, Goblins and Priests, Various tales play out in 3 dimensions around the trunk and among the leafy branches of a massive tree forming the core and backdrop of this amazing 19th century altar bell stand. The piece is 6 inches (15.5 cm) tall, the same diameter. It comes enclosed in an old wooden box. This matches the Maezukue Altar table previously listed. One of the most elaborate I have ever seen.

A beautiful Suiseki mounted on rich red carved wood base enclosed in a custom made kiri-wood display box. There is a sublime balance between the ragged peaks and deep clefts in the stone, and excellent example of the Renzan (Range) type of stone. The stone is 37 x 10 x 12 cm (15 x 4 x 5 inches) and is in excellent condition. There is one very small nick in the wooden base (1/8th of an inch or 3 mm in size). A massive tiger defensively nudges the female deity on this amazing 19th century silk Fukusa. Hand-painted and composed from patchwork patterns of lavish antique brocades and featuring glass eyes and metal teeth and claws sewn into the fabric of the creature. The piece is backed with red rinzu silk patterned with cranes and plum blossoms. It is 23-1/2 x 25-1/2 inches (59 x 64 cm) and is in fine condition. It comes wrapped around a pillow in a large kiri-wood box.

Ryugu-jo Castle is depicted in gold couched thread on the blue silk field of this superb Fukusa gift cloth dating from the turn of the 19th century. Frothing white waves surround the mythical palace, and the four corners of the cloth are secured by long-tailed minogame turtles, befitting the scene. It measures 25 x 32 inches (64 x 82 cm) and is in excellent condition but for some wear on one side of the red silk-crepe backing (see close-up photo)...

A museum quality koro covered in soft pink glaze decorated with chickens in raised relief surmounted with a woven silver lid by Kiyomizu Rokubei enclosed in the original signed wooden box. An early snow covers the branches of a ragged pine, the clutches of autumn still evident in the red tinged leaves of ivy clinging tremulously to the limbs. This is a spectacular large Kyo-yaki work signed on the base Seifu and enclosed in a period wooden box. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, it is nearly 10 inches (25 cm) diameter, 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) to the top of the lid and in excellent condition. This is the work of Seifu Yohei I.

Something I have never seen before, a set of pillows for one couple from Shimabara, one of the oldest pleasure districts of Kyoto, enclosed in the original Kiri-wood storage box. The man’s pillow is a simple roundel of soft leather. The woman’s, made for a geisha and her elaborate coiffure, is a small tapering black lacquered box with a drawer for a hair pin, to the top of which is secured a brocade pillow with a silk chord...

A Japanese blue and white koro with all over cartographic decoration of the Japanese Islands, with provinces labeled, and other bodies including seas and land masses with countries labled. The name used for Korea uses the name Joseon which dynasty (established in 1392) ended by varying accounts between 1897 and 1910. The censer could be later still. The cover with Shishi lion pierced finial over the compressed spherical tripod censer with stylized handles...

Gazing at the back of the traditional Maiko apprentice, pins and combs hold her coiffure perfect, our eyes travel down to the neck revealed as it joins the white painted shoulders, the luxurious kimono with its signature high and draping sash: She has the two of hearts! A very unusual painting reflecting the oddities of western influence at the opening of the 20th century by Matsumoto Ichiyo (1893-1952)...

The circular dish made of fine milky white porcelain decorated in overglaze enamels as iron-red, blue, green, yellow, black and gold. The well painted with a prunus tree, coiled dragon and ho-o bird. The reverse with scrolls. Condition: fine, the green enamel with partial spalling. Dimension: diameter: 20.9 cm.

Lacquer covers the natural curves of this wood tray for use in the service of Sencha leaf Green Tea. It is 10 x 14-1/2 x 1 inches (25.5 x 37 x 2.5 cm). The bottom shows wear typical of use.
The importance of Sencha in the late Edo and Meiji periods cannot be overlooked, and has been studied in depth in the book Tea of the Sages, the Art of Sencha by Patricia Jane Graham.

A superb Sajigawa stone of deep olive patina, completely natural, on a carved rosewood base and enclosed in a fine old straight grain wood box. A silver inlayed bronze incense burner by Inami Keishu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall and in fine condition. Inami Keishu worked in metal for more than 60 years. He has been often exhibited and prized with the Nihon Kogei Kai (National Crafts Association) among many other National Events.

Well carved antler netsuke; of a Hotei carrying a bag on his back, early 19th century period. Size; Height of this carving is 1 3/4 inches. Condition Report; Good condition, age wear.

Silver canines gleam menacingly in the corners of the mouth of this terrifying Edo period sabiji-nuri iron Menpo face mask. It has a three lame nodokake also with sabiji-nuri, laced with tight blue chord. The mustache is a bit ragged and there are typical chips around the edges from use.

A conical Jingasa battle hat 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) high, 14-1/2 inches (37 cm) diameter entirely gilded outside with genuine gold. Inside is lacquered black and retains the tie holds for the liner. There is some writing within, and a maru-ichi crest. There is damage to the peak and edges, but is quite impressive looking, and was likely used by the immediate vanguard of the Daimyo. One of two variations we have, they are from Omi province, just outside of Kyoto in old Japan.

A six panel gold screen decorated in a style harkening to the first half of the Edo featuring angular trees interspersed with blossoming cherries, a torrent splashing angrily through the right quarter topped with moriage gold clouds. Many repairs and losses to the heavy pigments attest to the great age of the painting. Excellent size for wall mounting, it is 62 x 138 inches (157.5 x 350 cm). The border is from a later mounting. Due to size the cost of shipping is to be accrued separately.

A good Japanese studio porcelain celadon censer (after Chinese Song dynasty examples), of kinuta color, by Suwa Sozan. Seal impressed on the bottom between the three legs with unglazed feet. With an even more extraordinary, finely worked silver cover with gilt highlights (eyes, beak, comb, feather details, hollyhock blossom stamens.) The treatment and the details of the hollyhock leaves down to the veining and insect nibbles is sublime. The exquisite detailing of the hairs on the Hoo-oo no Tori'...

A good Japanese studio porcelain vase with decoration of egrets among lotuses. The egrets in no-outline, reverse out decoration against gradient blue background. The beaks and particularly the eyes (with yellow fill) picked out nicely in fine detail with black. The loti also with no outline and contrasting nicely against the fading blue. The foot with three iron spurs spaced evenly along the unglazed ring foot and an errant iron smudge near one under the glaze inside the foot. Curiously, no mark...

Feminine figures dive upwards, forming the handles on this large art-deco vase by Nakajima Yasumi II enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Jundo Eikan Kabin.
