Studio pottery vase by Gerhard Liebenthron, a well known ceramic artist in Germany. Born in the 1920s, I believe he is still working today. The vase has a wonderful shape and size and is beautifully embellished. It has a hand incised mark on the base, GL, 84 (for 1984) and is in excellent condition. This type of primitive decor is typical of much of his work. If you search on Liebenthron and select "with archives", you can see three other pieces I recently sold of a similar design. His work is i... Click for details

Gorgeous studio ceramic vase from Germany richly glazed in various shades of red. The vase shows a strong Asian influence in it's delicate, subtle design and gradation of color. It was made by Klaus Schultze, born 1927 whose work often shows a Japanese influence. A prominent studio potter, his pieces are quite rare to find. He established a workshop in Paris in 1956. He is best known for his large scale sculptures and public installations made from colored brick which he began producing in the... Click for details

This German studio vase was produced by the Unterstab studios. It appears to be a family operation and I have seen this mark attributed to Ralf Unterstab. I have another piece listed by Kerstin Unterstab. This piece is 11 1/4" tall and the body is 11 inches in circumference. The mottled brown/cream design on the outer matte surface morphs into a green/brown semi gloss palette on the inner top. Marked on the bottom with Unterstab in a semi-circle around a large T.

This early German art pottery vase is by Richard Uhlemeyer, whose work is very distinctive. Many of his pieces have this incised sgraffito decoration that looks like lightening. This piece which is 6 inches tall has a mottled reddish brown glaze and the incised pattern which reveals the bisque surface underneath. There are a few tiny glaze pops from the production process but it's in excellent condition. Based on other pieces, I would date this to the 1940s. It is marked on the base and also sta...
