This is a large and beautiful tray, hand made in the earlier part of the 20th century using the same or similar designs and same methods used to make these gorgeous trays in the 18th and 19th centuries. I have three of these made by the same person (whose name I do not know), and this is the first of the three. This tray is approximately 19" by 24" and is in nearly perfect condition. This was sold to me in Paris long ago as ivory, and so fine is the grain that it looks like it. It is a needlecase probably made by a prisoner of the Napoleonic War aboard a prison ship in England, where a popular pasttime and business was making objects out of what they could lay their hands on: bone, ivory, gold coins, silver, coconut shells, etc. The fronds and draperies suggested in the carefully cut reticulations of the body of this piece are enhanced by the fluted band that also gives a ... Extremely rare tantalus made out of a hippo foot. The ultimate symbol for the big game hunter of the early twentieth century.
The tantalus stands 12 1/2" high, the opening has a diameter of 5 1/2". The silver plated rim reads: "Rowland Ward Limited of Piccadilly". The decanter stands 9 ¼” high and has been damaged on the rim.
