Maker of this spoon is Samuel Burill, Boston Silversmith 1704-1740
The shank has exceptional bright cut work
leading to the oval with a monogram. The back of the bowl has a somewhat worn bird, worn as that area rests on the table, resting there since early in the 1700s. The shank seems thicker than most coin spoons. The maker's mark "SB" is on the reverse but the B is not showing in my picture but it is there. Please note that the mark between the letters is not a dot but a tiny triangle. T... Click for details

It shares a close stylistic appearance to a slightly earlier cup in our collection, Trocadero # 21176, as well a history of descending in the family of Nicholas Biddle, founder of the Bank of the United States and builder of Classical masterpiece, Andalusia. The Rococo ogee upper rim and handle are echoed in the repousse frontal cartouche surrounding the monogram, “EWB.” The height is ... Click for details

By its hallmark, “Bennett & Caldwell,” it is possible to date this superb mug to between 1843 and 1848, the Philadelphia partnership that eventually led to today’s J E Caldwell & Company.(To see this piece's cousin, please view another cup that descended in the Biddle family, Trocadero #21177.) All in neo-Rococo style, the ballooned sides boast panels of repousse rose festoons alternating with plain, bordered panels, one bearing the initials “CB.” The applied ogee rim blends in with the matchi...
