For want of a previously established name, I have decided it most appropriate to call this quilt pattern Shooting Stars. The chevrons around each eight point star give the effect of tremendous movement in all directions. Chevrons are a rich, teal blue/ green print. Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Very well quilted. Measures 92" x 94". Middletown, Maryland (Frederick County) origin; circa 1850.

Nine Patch Crib Quilt set in in such a way that it has two additional patterns. The red and white surrounding triangles can be seen as Bow Ties; or each Nine Patch block can be the center of a large Variable Star. Excellent condition. Measures 32" square; circa 1890. Exquisite Light and Dark Log Cabin quilt done in a combination of cotton and wool challis. Wonderful tiny scale to the blocks; each log is a mere 1/4" wide. Bright red centers (which some believe represents the hearth of the log cabin) give lots of punch. Measures 68" x 76". Circa 1880; Pennsylvania origin.

Extraordinary Grenfell hooked mat that is exceptional in several ways. The pattern is unusual; rarely did they use geometric motifs. The octagonal shape of the rug is also a rarity. The colors are rich and stunning. Condition is like brand new. Original label is present and totally intact. Measures 12 1/4" square. Looks dramatic placed on square or on point. Circa 1930; Newfoundland; Labrador.

Pristine, unwashed Cotton Crazy Quilt that looks like a group of fabric collages. Mini blocks are a wonderful touch as is the sole piece of orange right in the middle. One of a kind, sophisticated country quilt. Solid blocks in particular show off the funky quilting patterns with something different done to fit each of the irregularly shaped pieces. Nicely crafted; measures 73" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.

Baskets Quilt classically arranged so that each bed partner sees the pattern right side up. What makes this piece so striking is the additional row going down the center, making the entire composition both literal and abstract. Sawtooth border gives a lovely frame. Indigo and white Drunkard's Path quilt with a great appliqued border of stylized Oakleaves. The vining part of the border contributes the the image of a winding path. Strangely, Drunkard's Path was a pattern often used for fundraising quilts of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Well quilted with flowers and cross hatching. Variable Stars Crib Quilt with an unusual combination of fabrics. The background is a ubiquitous double pink calico seen often in late 19th century Pennsylvania quilts. The stars, though, are made of fabrics with which I am not familiar. In and of themselves, they have a 1920's look. I am not convinced, though, that they are not of the same period as the background.
