Stella Rubin Antique Quilts and Decorative Arts

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul ( aka Lemon Peel) is one of the patterns that most effectively creates optical illusions. A slice from one block is "robbed" from the adjoining block and vice versa. When placed side by side, they create the impression of overlapping circles. This example is particularly unusual in the use of the soft grey tone, rarely seen in quilts. Well quilted and pieced. Measures 70" x 80"; Pennsylvania origin. Circa 1910.

Rising Sun seems to be the closest known pattern I can find to this. I believe it to be a unique variation. The color combination is as striking as the pattern. Accompanied by extensive family documentation. The family moved to Iowa in the 1860's where this quilt was likely made. Well crafted. Has been professionally laundered. Discoloration remains on the back but the front is spotless. Measures 78" x 92".

Must unusual 1870's quilt of stuffed work applique Wreaths. Placement of the primary wreaths is effective in creating a secondary wreath pattern as well. Very unusual size for this era and type of quilt; measures 62" x 76", a great size to hang. Slight wear to a few inches of binding; all else about the quilt is in excellent condition. The push button clasp works well, the chain handle can be worn double as pictured or pulled through the loops to make a single chain handle. The lining is clean and in tact. A very lovely example of purses of thi... Click for details
