Unusual small serving boat made by William Spratling of ebony with silver. At first glance, this looks like his butter dish without the silver inset. Closer examination, though, shows that the silver design is not the same as on his butter dish; nor is the shape of the well identical to that of the butter. This may have been used for nuts or other dried food. Measures 9 9/16" in length and 2 1/2" at its widest. Excellent condition. 1949-56 hallmark.
