Offered here is a miniature oil on board, 19th century, in a lemon gilt frame. The frame shows some wear and a split along the right side that has been glued. The painting depicts a small sailboat on a river with hills in the background, trees, rocks and foliage in the foreground. The light is handled skillfully, and it appears to be that late afternoon sun that sets everything ablaze. It's a charming, tranquil scene that makes me long for such leisure. These little paintings are really quite nice. They represent family crests, or coats of arms, and are perhaps examples since no names appear on the paintings. They are each well painted and depict a shield with a crown. The designs are quite similar except that one has 3 dogs on one side where the other has bands. Wonderful 2" x 1 3/4" watercolor on ivory portrait miniature of Charlotte von Hagn (1809-1891) after the well known 1828 oil portrait by Joseph Stieler (1781-1858). This example contemporary to Stieler's piece, circa 1840, and is faintly signed "Stieler" along the left edge. It is possible that this is a signature of Stieler himself, but as I cannot confirm this, I am selling it as "after Stieler". Immaculate condition. The frame had once a support at the back which has long since gone.
