Wonderful portrait miniature on ivory of an elderly lady, by well-known Scottish artist Patrick McMor(e)land (1741 - died after 1809). The droll old lady wears a black cloak over a white fichu and matching lace bonnet -- her expression is sly and quizzical! The portrait is signed on the obverse with the monogram PM and is set in a gold bracelet clasp; the slides are missing. Measures 1 5/8". Very good condition; there is a small area of retouch to her left shoulder.

This is a very interesting little painting on porcelain, painted entirely in tones of grey, of animals and musical instruments, primarily. The scene is certainly rife with symbolism, however what it may be escapes me entirely. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating and busy scene. The animals have wonderful and mysterious expressions on their faces, as do the monkeys in costume in the lower right section of the painting. The owl has a knowing expression, as one might guess, and the cat looking ont... Click for details

Superbly painted portrait miniature in watercolor on ivory of beautiful young lady, circa the mid 19th century. With her beautiful face and sweet, serene expression, she sits in a blue chair holding a small red book. Every detail of her dress is perfectly executed: her hair is smoothly parted in the middle, looped in front of her ears, and gathered at the nape. She wears a blue dress with white fichu, lace sleeves, and a gold pendant on a chain. The portrait is framed in a period folding lea... Click for details

Portrait miniature of a rather unusual looking girl -- a primitive painted in watercolor on ivory -- circa the early to mid 19th century. Her frowning eyes, rosebud mouth and pointed chin give her a wonderfully pinched expression. Wears a bright coral necklace and white décolleté frock. Set in a gilt metal and ebonized wood frame, measuring 4 1/8” by 3 ˝”. Sight size is 2 1/8” by 1 1/8”. Good condition; mount is worn and frame has two chips at the bottom edge; glass and painting are slight... Click for details
