Early 20th Century American Ash Can School of painting. Circus act under the "big top" of three female acrobat riders atop three palomino horses, audience in background. 14" x 14" (35.56 x 35.56 cm) oil on masonite, newly framed to 21" x 21" x 1.5" (53.34 x 53.34 x 3.81 cm). Unsigned; heavy impasto brush strokes. Some losses around edges, primarily when out of frame, craquelure, otherwise great condition. 1929-1939.

Offered here is an appealing landscape by Texas artist, Virginia Battle Betts (1880-1942). Betts was known for her portraits, landscapes and still lifes. She was also a muralist. Betts studied in NY with William Merritt Chase and, later, in Paris before WWII, where she exhibited in 1930. The painting measures 12.75" by 16.25" as framed, and the site dimensions are 9.5" by 13". It is on artists board. The painting and the gilt wood frame are in fine condition. Ornate antique gesso and gilt frame missing a piece lower right corner, and has extensive cracking throughout. 7.5" x 9.5" (19.05 x 24.13 cm), framed to 14.5" x 16.25" x 2" (36.83 x 41.27 x 5.08 cm). Original oil painting, Italian fishing boats, signed by artist, lower right, although we do not recognize the signature. Three fishing boats, one with sail down, and all with overhanging nets, it appears, at ready for the upcoming day's catch, or perhaps they are just returning. Wonderfully painted, very thick in areas, in shades of blue-green, apricot, and vanilla....a luscious color-combination, and much used in Italian painting of this era.
