This is a very pretty box with a fine form and beautiful color. It is not perfect. The interior accoutrements are missing and some shrinkage and warping has occurred. That has caused the lid to be offset a bit and there is evidence of a little gluing here and there. That said, it is a very appealing box on four little bun feet and with a fine patina. It measures 9" by 5" by 6" high (measurements approximate).

This is a wonderful box that is hand carved of, I believe, teak. It appears to be a letter box, or to contain documents, since it has a rack in the lid that would hold paperwork. There is a center tray that lifts out, and a side compartment that opens, as well as wells for ink and pencils. The lip is trimmed in brass, top and bottom, that is nailed down, and the hinges and lock are brass. There is oxidation on the metal but it is not rusty. Offered here is a wonderful circa 1900 or so cave a liquer, or tantalus, made in France for an Indianapolis retailer by the name of Charles Mayer & Company. The box is made to look like old leather books. It is made of leather with gilt markings and trim. The gilt has faded and the leather is nicely worn. The interior is lined with marblized paper.
