This is a beautiful box originally intended to contain one of the first commercially successful calculators. The instrument was invented by Charles-Xavier Thomas, I believe, in the mid 19th century and was "suitable to compensate for the memory in all the operations of arithmetic". The box measures approximately 15" by 6.5" by 4" deep. It has lacquered sides, Lois XV style handles on the sides, and is lined in deep blue velvet (which appears to be a more recent addition).
