10” x 5.3”, excellent condition, dating likely to the late 19c. It is popularly believed that pottery at Tsutsumi in Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region of Northern was first made in the Genroku Era (1688-1703) when the Tsunamura Date asked a potter to come to Sendai from Tokyo. A traveling medicine vendor, Byotaichu Setsuei, half-naked and fully tatooed, in a furious bare-fisted struggle with a village leader, Shosharan Bokushun, from the series "108 Heroes of the Suikoden" by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). The enlargements feature the dragon and landscape tatoos which cover Setsuei's entire body. This print was published by Kagaya Kichibei and dates between 1827 - 1830. Two early 19th century finely executed Japanese lacquered wood plates, each decorated with a gold "mon" (family crest), pawlonia, and scrolling foliage set against a black ground.
