This large Gila bowl is a very scarce subtype known as Perry Mesa which is defined by the addition of some red paint on the interior (see center circle). The bowl measures 11.25 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. The geometric design on the interior is very well drawn and exhibits three bear claw or bird wing images in a swirling pattern. The exterior has an unusual contiguous black and white band which in itself is not often seen.

Ex votos are one of the very charming forms of Mexican folk art. An expression of intense faith, devotion and thankfulness - these painted pieces are offerings of thankfulness for divine intervention. This particular piece loosely translated is dedicated by Gaudensio Preciliano to thank the Jesus for his intervention (and bestowal of a favor) in the year 1963. Measures 11 7/8" by 7 7/8". An exceptional Chancay couple from Peru, ca. 1100 - 1450 AD. The male is 10-1/2" tall, virtually perfect. The horns on his head, combined with the painted tumi emblem, are most likely indicative of his status as a shaman. He is depicted with a traditional sling wrapped around his body. The female is 10" tall and has a little chipping on the right foot. Both have complex avian designs on their faces and hands representing ritual tattoos. An excellent Nazca bowl with avian motif from Peru, ca. 100 - 400 AD. This 6-7/8” diameter vessel features four large birds, most likely parrots, boldly painted against a white background. Some staining, probably from inclusion in a mummy bundle, light pitting inside. Great example.
