A stunning example of fine artistry by the famous mother and son potters, Popovi Da and Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo. This black on black plate is in mint condition! Made in the late 1950s before Popovi started dating them with the signature. Measures 9 1/2" diameter, the design is unlike any we have seen, possibly birds or water symbols. The gunmetal finish is perfect, but hard to photograph. Feel free to contact us with any questions about this perfect pottery plate!

An exceptional Chancay "Cura" figure from Peru, ca. 1200 - 1450. This 19-1/2" tall healer is wonderfully attired with a nicely detailed tunic and is wearing large conical headdress. The diminutive arms project from the sides and the face is quite expressive. The clothing is painted with traditional Chancay design patterns of the type you see in their textiles. In excellent condition, with strong paint and good deposits. A rare example.

If you're looking for a large and impressive piece for little money, this is it! This seated Nayarit figure stands just over 13" tall and dominates over similar pieces from the region. Armand Labbe notes in "Shamans, Gods & Mythic Beasts..." that the seated bench posture is ubiquitous throughout the Pre-Columbian world as a symbol of power, an interpretation further bolstered by the relative scarcity of these pieces compared to other human figures from Pre-Columbian shaft tomb burials. Labbe not... Click for details

The Inca ruled the western coast of South America from about 1450 to 1530 through a civilization comparable to the Romans in terms of expansion rate and technological development. Among their many achievements, the Inca roadways, bureaucratic government, and counting systems particularly helped them dominate a vast area of South America. Their domination was short-lived, however. In 1532, the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro and his men arrived from Panama during a time of civil unrest for the Inca. ... Click for details
