A fine Buenos Aires Polychrome type Maternal group from the Diquis Zone of Costa Rica. Chiriqui Phase ceramic, ca. 1000 AD. This 3-3/8" tall seated polychrome figure is portrayed holding a baby and is executed in black and red designs over dark cream slip. Intact, excellent condition.

An unusual Colima Shaman figure, 10-1/2" tall, ca. 200 BC - 300 AD. He is portrayed seated, with arms and legs stretched out in front of him. The small horn on his forehead designates his status of shaman and the mouth is shown full of incised teeth. Highly burnished.

A 5" tall seated female from the San Juanito (Escobedo) area of Jalisco, ca. 200 BC - 300 AD. She wears the elaborate armbands and ear ornaments characteristic of that variant, with a small vent hole in the back of the head. Nicely painted in off-yellow and red. This type of pregnant female with hands held to the swollen belly has been interpreted as conceptualizing the life cycle, the continuation of life, death, rebirth and therefore the Mother Goddess. A fine Early Nazca bowl from Peru, ca. 1 - 300 AD. This 7-1/2" diameter bowl has eight nicely detailed fish painted against black panels, over dark reddish-brown slip. Reportedly recovered from the ruins of Ica in 1957.

An excellent Mayan cylinder from the Peten region of Guatemala, ca. 550 - 800 AD. This fine tapered vessel is 8-1/2" tall and has a 4-1/2" diameter. The primary motif consists of two renditions of the Serpent Monster with noseplug, beard, headdress and stylized ear plugs, all painted in red, orange and black, on a white background. The phallic designs surrounding the monster represent drops of blood and semen. A well drawn series of glyphs rings the rim. Minor repair.

A delicate Chavinoid bowl from Ecuador, 2" diameter, ca. 200 BC - 500 AD. The incredibly detailed incising makes this little gem a rarity. It features two bands of six egrets, facing each other in pairs. The repetition of details and entire figures in rows is very characteristic of Chavin design, with birds usually represented in profile, standing beak to beak. A fine 4-1/2" tall El Bosque phase olla with flared rim from Costa Rica, ca. 1 - 500 AD. Made from buff terra cotta and painted in deep red with cream accents around the adornos. Decorated in traditional style with two serpents and appliqué pellets, which symbolize the alligator. One tiny probe hole, else in wonderful condition.
