A wonderful Mayan tripod jar, 4-3/4" high, from El Salvador, ca. 600 AD. Exquisitely painted with three stylized dancers depicting a transformation ritual. We've had several explanations on the iconography, including the suggestion that the figures are ballplayers (yoke around waist), dancers transforming into winged creatures or a shaman transforming into a spirit's face. Each of the panels is separated by a stylized winged serpent design.
