The Jama-Coaque culture of northern coastal Ecuador is one of many poorly-known cultures that persevered in the northern Andes for centuries. Closely associated with the Guangala and Bahia cultures, the Jama-Coaque were found to the north of the modern-day Manabi province of Ecuador. Their wealth seems to have been largely derived from fishing, farming, and trade of coastal commodities, such as shells. Despite the fact that they left little noteworthy architecture, the pottery figures from these... Click for details

While most people think of mummies as exclusively Egyptian, the practice of mummification in South America was in use centuries before the Egyptians as early as 5000 B.C. The Moche civilization, which fluorished between 100 B.C. and 800 A.D., took the practice of mummification to a level that rivaled that of the Egyptians. The Tumaco culture flourished in modern-day southwest Columbia and northern Ecuador along the Pacific coast. Despite a territory comprised of mostly islands and marshland along the San Juan, Mira and Patia rivers, the Tumaco developed a stable culture through persistent irrigation of cropland and the export of salt, which provided a constant influx of precious metals. Accordingly, gold, silver, and platinum jewelry are among the many Tumaco artifacts still found in Colombia and Ecuador today.

The Jamacoaque civilization existed in what is today northern Ecuador from about 350 B.C. - 1540 A.D. As a coastal civilization, the Jamacoaque enjoyed great success as traders up the western coast of South America & Mexico and they developed a uniquely distinct and vibrant art style that freely drew upon influences of other cultures. While too far north to be integrated into the Inca empire, the arrival of the Spaniards decimated the Jamacoaque much as it did virtually every other civilization ... Click for details

The Chancay civilization was one of many short-lived, but powerful societies to develop in what is now Peru and Ecuador. Despite a legacy of pottery and sculpture that borders on cute and whimsical, the Chancay were powerful warriors whose attack on the city of Cuzco in 1438 would have massive implications for the area. Although their attack was barely repelled, the leader of Cuzco was deposed by his son, who set out to conquer all of Peru in retribution under a new imperial name: Inca.
