A detailed glazed and moulded pottery fragment depicting an erotic scene. To the left is a figure of a naked satyr with a long horse-like tail. His body is turned towards a partially draped maiden who is attempting to flee from his grasp, but his left hand is on her shoulder and his right hand is aimed in the direction of her genitalia. A pottery oil lamp constructed from a turned bowl, with one side pinched to form a spout. The shape is often referred to as a "cocked hat" type. These oil lamps have been found throughout the Mediterranean and predate the more complex types of lamp which are seen more commonly on the market. Beginning in the Middle Kingdom, the ancient Egyptians were buried with small human statues called shabtis. These figures were to serve as servants in the afterlife, performing any work necessary so that the deceased could enjoy eternity in peace. This was accomplished by inscribing Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead on the shabti, which reads: "O shabti, if the deceased is called upon to do any of the work required there in the necropolis at any time...you shall say, 'Here I am, I will do it.'" ... A black glazed pottery trefoil lipped oinochoe shaped jug, used for pouring wine. The front of the body is painted in white, yellow and red pigments with a row of vines and grape clusters below dot and ovolo borders separated by incised horizontal lines. The sack-shaped body is mounted to the back with a single strap handle which extends to the rear of the rim, the rim is pinched into a three-way (trefoil) spout which allows the contents to be poured in multiple directions with minimal spillag...
