A very fine quality red glazed pottery head in the form of a male with grotesque and exaggerated features wearing a foliate wreath or garland.
During the late Hellenistic era craftsmen in Alexandria in Egypt became fascinated with realism and began to produce art reflecting the day-to-day life around them. Pottery figurines of old men and women, young children, the ill and the mal-formed were produced in large numbers.
Figures and heads with exaggerated features such as this are usually refer... Click for details

A moulded pottery head from a figure of a young child.
The features are indicative of a young male with rounded cheeks and hair which falls into curls around the ears. Possibly a representation of the infant god Harpocrates, but I believe the features are a little bit too naturalistic.
Greek, early Hellenistic period, 4th or 3rd Century BC
Intact as shown.
Size: 3.5 x 3 cms. 6.1 cms including stand.
Provenance Ex: private collection, UK.
Mounted on a small limestone display stand.

A hollow moulded terracotta figure depicting a couple in an intimate pose.
Both figures are seated on a rocky outcrop (in a manner imitating Tanagra figures), the female figure appears to be seated on the left knee of the male. Both figures are draped and the female appears to have drawn her Himation over her head.
Whether this is a representation of intimate daily life or a reference to a play or myth is unclear. Neither figure appears to be significantly distinguished as a satyr or maenad.
