An attractive and large hollow-moulded pottery head from a figurine of a goddess.
The head is depicted wearing a Polos head-dress below which the hair is held in a multi-stranded filet. The goddess is also shown wearing pointed-drop shaped earrings.
The back is plain except for a large air-vent to prevent the wet clay from exploding during firing.
The context, style of the moulding and colour of the clay suggests an attribution to the region of ancient Cyrenaica (modern Libya), the lands aro... Click for details

A Greek Corinthian pottery aryballos shaped vessel.
The bulbous body is decorated with two wide horizontal bands of brown glaze; the rim has a further band of brown glaze around the edge. Below the rim is a pierced lug handle.
Unusually for this type of vessel, it stands on a foot rather than a rounded base, therefore we have dated the pot approximately one hundred years later than the standard Corinthian shapes.
This type of vessel was used for the storage and transport of bathing oils.

An lovely and finely detailed thin pottery appliqué or gaming counter.
The back is plain and the front is moulded with a facing head of the gorgon Medusa. The face of Medusa is gilded.
The exact purpose of this type of plaque is unclear but it was either intended to be a counter for a board game, or an appliqué which would have been attached to a very elaborate item of clothing or head-dress.
Greek colonies of Tarentum in Southern Italy, 4th Century BC.
