SOLD - May 2006 UK Pounds £650

An unusual pale buff pottery flask designed in imitation of a glass vessel with wicker-basket surround to the body. The body is moulded with horizontal bands to look like reed bands and the trellis style decoration was added by incision. The base of the flask is also modelled in imitation of a glass bottle, with a convex surface and fake pontil mark to the centre. This flask was possibly produced as a novelty item or as a container for a copy of an expensive imported "branded" merchandise. Rom... Click for details

A moulded terracotta hollow fragment from the upper part of a figure of the goddess Venus. The goddess is shown bare-breasted with her hands raised above her head where she holds a basket of produce - a reference to the worship of the goddess as a symbol of fertility and her association with the Egyptian goddess Isis. Her facial features are relatively clear and her hair can be seen falling over her left shoulder in three long tresses. A decorative fragment with an interesting mythological c... Click for details

sold -UK Pounds - £130.

A white marble thick relief fragment carved with an arm and a wing of an Erote with what appears to be the tail of a dolphin behind. Presumably this formed part of a depiction of Venus and Eros, the dolphin being associated with the background of the goddess' origins from the sea. Free-standing statues of Venus were often carved with a small dolphin and Erote supporting her legs, rather than the traditional and formulaic tree-trunk. Probably from the rim of a sarcophagus. Roman, 2nd or 3rd c... Click for details
