Gandharan refers to an artistic style that developed in what is now northwestern Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan between the 1st century BC and the 7th century AD. Its roots lie in the Greco-Roman influence first introduced into the region by Alexander the Great, and subsequently by the trade of the Roman and Byzantine empires.
