A Japanese teapot / wine ewer cleverly decorated in enamels and resist with chrysanthemum heads on a diaper ground. This is almost certainly by Tanzan and would have been signed inside the lid.Dating from the Meiji period, it stands 5 3/8inches (13.6 cms) high. It has a replacement wooden lid. It is in otherwise good condition.

Hayashi Mamiko(b.1959) is an elegant ceramic artist who after graduating from prestigious Keio University started her ceramic career in 1985 studying with Ito Keiji at the Gifu City Ceramic Art Institute. She has had a gallery based career thereafter. This silver-white square vase has the appearance of marble, and as I have spoken with Hayashi many times she often mentions how hard this form is to make. A very finely potted semi eggshell porcelain cup and saucer beautifully painted in underglaze blue with bamboo in a typically asymetric Japanese style. There is a 10 character mark to the base of each. In addition, the cup is marked under the glaze with the letters VM which suggests this piece was part of a commissioned set.

In the 1973 book called 'Kama-betsu, Gendai no Tougei' (Individual kilns, Contemporary Pottery) by the late Kuroda Ryoji he wrote that seven potters were the upcoming stars of Mino. A good Japanese cloisonne vase decorated in gilt brnze wire and enamels with brocade and roundels.Dating from the 2nd half of the C19th., it stands 9 1/2inches (24 cms) high. In the large English book on Hamada published by Kodansha one can find a very similar platter by Hamada, see photo #59. In the back Hamada describes making this plate, "When this was still in the press mould, I paddled the pattern. The tenmoku glaze is ladled on first, then the nuka glaze edge. I never get tired of this shape and am still making these dished now." The piece in the book dates to 1946 as does the even better work we offer here.
