A young courtier rides through silver clouds of night mist past the thatched residence of a woman, flute pressed to his lips as he returns the lonely love song wrenched from the 13 chords of her Koto harp. The Meiji period scene is surprisingly well painted for this genre. It is performed with pigment on paper, and features a gold border with black lacquered wooden frame, retaining the original backing paper. The screen is in very good condition, with one small repair to the second panel, and... Click for details

An explosion of Taisho color and romantic imagery. A female peacock shelters under the brilliantly stylized foliage of a pine tree. Sunlight streams in through the fluffy aquamarine forms, creating a rich golden orange reflection on the tree’s branches, highlighted with splashes of gold flecks. The piece interestingly has two titles, the second apparently an afterthought by the artist. The original storage box is titled ‘Sankoku Yuhi’, or ‘valley sunset’. Inside the box there is a card with the... Click for details

This finely plaited bamboo ikebana basket (“hanakago”) was crafted in the unusual moon (“tsuki”) shape and was made for hanging flower arrangements. Meiji period (1868-1912). An unidentified three-character signature is carved onto a bamboo strip inserted into the base. The entire basket has been masterfully plaited in a herringbone pattern which required great skill to accommodate the increasing width differentials from the top to the bottom of the basket. A thick strip of bamboo surrounds the ... Click for details

A breathtaking amount of work has gone into this one tiny Meiji period sake cup signed Kutani-Kaburaki. Raised white chrysanthemum blossom on twirling gold leaved vines over a dark ground speckled with moriage green. It comes in an old kiri-wood box simply titled Hai (Cup). It is just more than 2-1/4 inches (6 cm) in diameter, and is itself in perfect condition. There is one part of wood missing off the side of the box. The Kaburaki Shoten was opened in Kanazawa in 1822 by Kaburaki Tsugusuk... Click for details
